Product Description
The Recon 550R is one of the most compact and ergonomic digital night vision devices available in the market. The Recon 550R features high light gathering capacity (F/d = 1.0). Combined with large magnification, this ensures one of the best viewing distances among budget NV devices. Model Recon 550R is equipped with an integrated video recorder to capture image observed and a jack to couple with external sources. The jack functions both in video out mode and video in mode. Video out mode allows video recording without use of adaptors and camcorders or cameras; video in mode can be employed to transmit image via radio channel from remote cameras to Recon’s display.

By Ed Reese
The scope is solidly built and functions even better than I anticipated. The first time I tried it on an completely overcast night I spotted a deer across a clearing in the forest 135 yards away, even without using the built in IR illuminator. As far as bang for your buck, I don't think you can beat it. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that my box, although it appeared factory sealed, was missing the MiniSD Card, Card reader and adaptor, which means I can't take any pictures or shoot video, which is the reason I purchased the 550R model instead of the less expensive 550. Trying to figure out how to contact someone at Amazon to rectify the situation.

The 550r works better than I thought it would. I've used generation 1 & 3 devices and the 550r ranks somewhere in between. Don't get me wrong, the 550r does not have near the light gathering capability of gen 3. In comparison to the gen 1 units I've used the 550r does gather more light and gives a better picture. I have used this thing on very dark nights with no moon and no ir and it can give me at least a low quality view where gen 1 would not give me anything without ir. Turn on an ir and the picture quality jumps into the gen 2 area. Due to the magnification this is not an indoor device and can't be used like a 1x magnification unit. The field of view is small but larger than a Yukon Ranger. The built in ir illuminator is very strong but has a red glow and can be seen easily. A 940 wavelength ir illuminator is a must if you wish to be covert. In my opinion the built in recorder is great but does give slightly diminished picture quality when in use. Daylight use is over rated, it's NIGHT VISION. Day use is good because you don't have to worry about damaging the 550r with bright light. It's also good if you are going to use the motion sensor recording option. If you can't afford gen 2 or 3 but want night vision I would recommend the 550r before buying a gen 1 unit unless you want a 1x magnification unit. The 550r is built well. Only thing I'd chang is to give it a adjustable 1x-5x magnification.
